Let’s set the scene, because this one actually matters: this was Cristiano Ronaldo’s last World Cup. Forty-one years old, still starting for Portugal, and everybody knew going in this was it, one way or another. So no pressure on a jersey, right? Just casually being the shirt for the actual final chapter of one of the greatest careers in the history of the sport. No big deal.

The group stage was a grind and I respect that Portugal didn’t make it easy on anybody watching. Draw DR Congo 1-1, blow out Uzbekistan 5-0 because apparently they had one bad night in them and decided to unload it all at once, then draw Colombia 0-0 to limp into the knockout stage as runners-up. Nobody said the road to a fairytale ending has to look pretty the whole way.

Then the Round of 32 against Croatia, Gonçalo Ramos scores the winner, Portugal’s through, and for one round it genuinely felt like this was building to something. That’s the cruelest part about how sports actually work — it lets you believe right up until it doesn’t.

Round of 16 against Spain. Portugal holds, holds, holds, and then Mikel Merino scores in injury time, and that’s it. 0-1. Ronaldo’s last World Cup ends in the cruelest possible way a World Cup can end, in the last few minutes, against Spain, with everybody watching knowing exactly what they were watching.

Who’s this for: anyone who watched that entire run, good and bad, and wants the actual shirt from Ronaldo’s final World Cup summer — not some replica from a different, less complicated year.
